ANDYOMO: Hi Andre! Can you start by tell our readers about yourself? How old are you, where are you from, and how long have you  been in NYC?

ANDRE: My name is Andre Uncut, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. 29 Years Old

And at what age did you realize you wanted to make photography a profession?

I realized I wanted to take the creative route when I was in junior high school. I always loved watching music videos and movies so I definitely had an early start within creating.

Film or digital? Do you use both and do you prefer one over the other?

I usually shoot both digital and film but my love for history pulls me more to film. It captures a moment very differently than digital and challenges you to take a shot more seriously.

What has been your favorite photography experience so far?

My favorite photography moment would have to be a 1970’s hair project I did in 2017. I put various black women of different ages with their Afros and natural hair out. Until this day many people on the internet think it’s from the actual past.

And what inspirations do you draw from when conceptualizing a shoot?

When it comes to inspiration for my projects I go straight to old magazines and music videos. Vibe and Honey Magazine are truly works of art to my eyes.

Thats awesome. What are the stories you look to share with your photography?

I look to share stories of the black communities contribution to culture. Many things come back in style and I want everyone to know the origin of all that it comes from. Our history is so full beautiful creations it’s only right to keep the legacy going.

Can you tell me what makes a good subject to you?

A good subject to me is someone who understands the importance of culture. If that’s not comprehensible then it definitely won’t work.

How do you want people to PERCEIVE you and your work?

I want people to be proud when they see my work. Witness the beauty that is all around them and to keep the objective going.

Was there ever a time where you just wanted to give up? What keeps you MOVING FORWARD?

There were many times I thought of giving up but I knew that what I do is bigger than me. Connecting the right people together and creating for many to view.

Do you have any new projects underway that we should look out for?

In due time, I’ll have an exhibit soon based off a project from 2014 about black hair.

How do you stay CONNECTED to your TRUE SELF through art as a black creative?

I stay true to myself by being surrounded by a few people who are honest and make me understand my mission in this world.

What is your dream photoshoot or photography project?

My dream collaboration would have to be a photoshoot with Mary J Blige & Lil Kim. I cherish friendship and they have been close for almost 30 years. It would be great to capture that story creatively.

What is one piece of advice that you want to give black and POC creatives worldwide?

Advice I would like to give is “No matter how much you think you’re not doing anything remember that you have the freedom to even think so use it to the best of your ability.”

How can we create more space representation, inclusivity, and diversity of black and poc creatives Worldwide?

We need more mentorships and less gatekeepers. The more programs we have, the more progress we make together.

What’s next for you in your creative journey?

Next in my creative journey is to go international with all I do and bring the nostalgic styles for the world.
